Due to the December 2010 Accreditation of English Language Training Programs Act signed into law by President Obama, all language schools and programs in the United States wishing to maintain or apply for permission from SEVP to offer F-1 visas for full-time English Language training are required to become accredited.
The major accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for this purpose is the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). All ESL language schools and programs seeking accreditation must go through the following process:
1. Apply for eligibility.
2. Attend a 2-day workshop.
3. Complete a Self-study plan.
4. Complete a Self-study report.
5. Undergo a Site visit by a CEA review team.
6. Pass a review by the Commission for initial accreditation or re-accreditation.
